Airport Information
(Warsaw, Poland)

Previously known as Okecie Airport, Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport (WAW) is Poland's biggest and most modern airport, providing access to its biggest city. With flights to roughly 100 worldwide destinations, including Amsterdam, London and Paris, Warsaw Airport is understandably a busy facility and can handle around 35 arrivals and departures each hour.

Frederic Chopin Airport consists of two terminals, the second of which has only recently been opened, following a major construction project. Lying just 10 km / 6 miles south-west of central Warsaw and next to the historic village of Raszyn, annual passenger traffic has now topped eight million and set to rise even further. Warsaw Airport currently covers around 1,250 acres / 505 hectares and features two runways, with just over 20 taxiways.

Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport (WAW) Information: History and Facilities
Although the site where Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport currently resides has been used for aviation purposes for around 100 years, it was not until the early thirties that construction began. Opened in 1934 and known then as the Warsaw Okecie Airport, traffic was immediately moved from the nearby airfield at Pole Mokotowskie Park.

Warsaw Okecie Airport began serving civil flights for LOT Polish Airlines and was also used extensively by the Polish Air Force. Following considerable bombing in the Second World War, much of the airport needed to be completely rebuilt and many improvements were made at this time.

By 1970, a new international passenger building had been established and a further terminal was built in 1992, which is no longer in use. At this stage, traffic levels reached more than two million passengers each year. In December 2006, a new arrivals hall was created in Terminal 2 and filled with modern amenities for travellers.

Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport offers six ATMs spread around both arrivals and departures, as well as a banking branch of BHP and a post office. To book hotels, air tours and arrange transport, the onsite tourist information offices will be able to help. Other popular facilities include a room solely used for childcare, a chapel with Sunday mass, a left baggage centre, and an elevated observation deck, where you can sit back, relax and enjoy take-offs and landings.

A large duty-free shopping area is to be found within Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport, where you can purchase a range of Polish souvenirs and alcohol. There are also a couple of good restaurants onsite, along with coffee shops, such as the Café Voyage in the main departures area. Those looking for vending machines (known in Poland as 'automats') will find several in the Etiuda Terminal.

Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport (WAW) Information: About Warsaw Tourism
Warsaw is a city with much to offer visitors in the way of tourist attractions. Although much of the city was destroyed during WWII, Warsaw's old town was rebuilt out of the rubble and today the Old Town Square still proudly provides the city with its focal point. The Historical Museum of Warsaw can be found on the square and inside the exhibitions tell of the destruction and the rebuilding of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) as well as offering displays of artefacts from the city's past.

Close to Frederic Chopin Airport (WAW), the Old Town is the focus of the entertainment scene in Warsaw. Located next to the River Vistula, this historic district offers fine restaurants, cinemas, theatres, bars and nightclubs, which are clustered around the market place and connecting streets.
